About this landmark
A 100-acre retail property at the intersection of Sunrise Boulevard and Greenback Lane.
Sunrise Mall opened April 19, 1972, developed by H&C Associates, a partnership of Ernest W. Hahn, Inc. and James J. Cordano Sr., at a cost of about $40 million. The mall is located at the intersection of Sunrise Boulevard and Greenback Lane. The property encompasses approximately 100 acres and has a reported gross leasable area of 1,100,000 square feet. The four original 1972 anchor stores were Weinstock's, JCPenney, Sears, and Liberty House.
Anchor store closures and current operational status
Liberty House closed on June 20, 1984. Sears closed in July 2018. Both Macy's stores—the men's and women's locations—closed in March 2025. As of the most recent sources, JCPenney is the only remaining national anchor department store operating at the mall. Namdar Realty Group acquired the mall in December 2018 and, as of March 2025, was seeking a buyer for the property. The Royal Stage theater remains operational, with both interior mall and exterior entrances.
As of January 2026, property inspections had documented code violations. The owner accumulated over $1.7 million in fines by November 2025. At least a dozen mall businesses closed in the prior year. A fire broke out in the mall's vacant food court in January 2026. As of mid-February 2026, the property had 13 operating businesses, with additional closures in mid-January including Lids and Torrid.
The Sunrise Tomorrow Specific Plan and Sports Center proposal
The City's "Sunrise Tomorrow Specific Plan" envisions transforming the site into a mixed-use district with restaurants, hospitality, entertainment, and housing. The City Council unanimously approved an Economic Development and Participation Agreement (EDPA) in March 2026 with The Mettle Shop, a Sacramento-based sports and entertainment firm, and Tallen Capital Partners. The proposed Sunrise Sports Center would occupy approximately 13.75 acres at the site's northern end, the location of the former Macy's Men's building and adjacent parking. The project includes a 4,000-seat multi-use arena, two NHL-sized ice sheets, and covered and outdoor turf fields. Total estimated cost is $120 million, split between approximately $60 million in city municipal bonds and $60 million-plus in developer financing, with construction projected at 12–18 months and an operational target of mid-2028. The project is projected to draw 1.29 million annual visitors and generate about $26.2 million in annual economic output.
Insurance connection: Auto insurance and liability
California's mandatory minimum liability limits are $30,000 for the death or injury of one person, $60,000 total per accident for multiple people, and $15,000 for property damage. Insurers must offer uninsured-motorist coverage, though a driver may decline it by signing a waiver. Drivers licensed at least three consecutive years with one or fewer points qualify for the Good Driver discount, which must be priced at least 20 percent lower than a non-Good-Driver rate. Eligibility and limits depend on the individual policy. The issued policy controls.
